7 Mistakes You’re Making with Personal Safety (And How to Fix Them Fast)

Hey there, neighbor! JP Perron here from Vanguard Self-Defense Academy.
Living here in Chesterville, we’re lucky. We have a tight-knit community where people still wave from their porches and help each other out. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my years of martial arts, it’s that "safe" is a feeling, but "prepared" is a reality. We often walk through life thinking that bad things only happen in the movies or "the big city," but personal safety isn't about being paranoid: it's about being powerful.
I see people making the same mistakes every day. They aren't bad people; they just haven't been taught how to flip the switch from being a target to being a protector. We want to move you from that quiet "I hope nothing happens" anxiety to a loud, internal "I know exactly what to do" confidence.
Let’s dive into the seven biggest mistakes you’re probably making right now and, more importantly, how we can fix them together.
1. The "It Won’t Happen to Me" Mindset 🙈
The biggest mistake is thinking you’re exempt from reality. We call this the "Ostrich Effect": sticking your head in the sand and hoping the world stays nice. When you live with this mindset, you’re moving from a place of vulnerability to a place of shock when something actually goes wrong.
“Awareness is the first line of defense; if you aren't aware, you've already lost the first round.”
The Fix: Acceptance. Start by acknowledging that the world is unpredictable. This doesn't mean you should be scared! It means you should be ready. When you accept that your safety is in your hands, you start holding your head higher and making eye contact (Me-no-tsuke) with the people around you.
Awareness. Instinct. Action.
2. Training for the "Pretty" Instead of the "Ugly" 🥋
If you caught our blog post from February 13th, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Many people sign up for martial arts thinking they’re going to look like a movie star. They focus on high kicks and "pretty" sport Jiu-Jitsu techniques that look great on a trophy shelf but fail in a parking lot.

The Fix: Train for reality. At Vanguard, we teach Senshogo Ryu. It’s not about winning a gold medal; it’s about getting home to your family. We focus on "ugly" self-defense: the kind that works when you’re surprised, stressed, and wearing a heavy winter coat. Stop worrying about the points and start focusing on the protection.
Reality. Grit. Survival.
3. Being a "Screen Zombie" in Public 📱
We’ve all done it. You’re walking to your car, checking a text, scrolling through social media, and you have no idea who is standing ten feet away from you. This is a predator's dream. You’re signaling to the world that you are distracted and unaware of your surroundings.
The Fix: Use the "5-Second Rule" we discussed in our February 20th post. Before you even exit a building or get out of your car, take five seconds to scan the environment. Look for pre-attack cues. Put the phone in your pocket until you are inside a secure location. By simply looking up, you move from being a "soft target" to a "hard target."
Vision. Focus. Presence.
4. Ignoring Your "Internal Gear" 🛡️
In the professional world, people get in trouble for not checking their safety equipment. But in personal safety, your "gear" is your body and your intuition. Are you wearing shoes you can actually move in? Are you ignoring that "gut feeling" telling you something is off?

The Fix: Conduct a daily "Internal Inspection." Check in with your body. If your intuition (Kan) is screaming at you that a situation feels wrong, listen to it! Don't worry about being "polite" at the expense of being safe. If you feel a "ping" of danger, move. Change your route. Go back inside. Your gut is a survival tool developed over thousands of years: don’t ignore it.
Intuition. Respect. Protection.
5. Rushing Through Life on Autopilot 🏃♂️
Distraction and rushing are the leading causes of safety lapses. When we rush, we take shortcuts. We leave the door unlocked "just for a second." We walk through a dark alley because it saves two minutes. We don't notice the person following us because we're thinking about our 2:00 PM meeting.
The Fix: Slow down to speed up. Practice mindfulness in your movement. When you are walking, just walk. When you are driving, just drive. Being present allows you to spot hazards before they become emergencies. We want to move you from a state of frantic rushing to a state of calm, controlled precision.
Calm. Precision. Control.
6. The "YouTube Expert" Trap 💻
We love the internet, but you cannot learn how to defend your life from a 60-second video. A common mistake is thinking that watching a technique is the same as being able to execute it under pressure. When the adrenaline hits, your fine motor skills go out the window. If you haven't felt the weight of an opponent or practiced the muscle memory, you aren't ready.

The Fix: Get professional mentorship. There is no substitute for a dojo environment where you can practice with real partners under the guidance of experts. At Vanguard, we provide a safe space to fail so that you can succeed when it matters most. We take you from "knowing about it" to "being able to do it."
Practice. Mentorship. Mastery.
7. Having No "Plan B" for Emergencies 🆘
Most people have a plan for what they'll do if they win the lottery, but no plan for what they'll do if they’re cornered. If someone grabs you, what is your first move? If you get separated from your family in a crowd, where is the meeting spot? If you're injured, who is your emergency contact?
The Fix: Create a simple response protocol. You don't need a 50-page manual; you just need a few "If/Then" scenarios. "If someone approaches me aggressively, then I will create distance and use a loud verbal command." "If I feel unsafe, then I will go to the nearest public business." Having a pre-decided plan stops the "freeze" response and kicks you into "action" mode.
Plan. React. Prevail.
